Review: Greens First

This formulation is a lot like many others: fairly robust with a variety of greens (barley grass, spirulina, chlorella), followed by filler (oat betaglucen, apple fiber, brown rice, lecithin), and then antioxidant herbs and fruits (carrot, green tea, blueberry, plum, and other fruits and veggies). The rest is a collection of veggie powders and herbs. This particular formulation is pretty heavy in the fillers with almost 4 grams of it (I look for under 2 grams of filler in a good formulation). This product’s label, like so many others, call their fillers a “Fiber Blend” to give it a purpose in the formulation. And while it’s true that many of these fillers add fiber, I look for a more substantial reason for the filler to call it anything but “filler.” The rest is really nothing special…a few herbs and not enough kelp to even warrant mention (a token amount). At $4.22 per ounce, I think this is a bit pricey for the quality of the blend.

  1. I know the GreensFirst people and they’re top notch. I’ve met the NanoGreens doc, he knows his stuff. When it comes down to taste and how I felt using each, I thought the NanoGreens was just a bit better. I didn’t like the Stevia aftertaste of GreensFirst. But, both good products.

  2. Dr Howe and I are the developers of both NanoGreens10 and GreensFirst. We can tell you that are testing in 2009 has shown NanoGreens10 is much superior, as intended. We disagree with the notion that things like oat beta glucan and phosphatidyl choline are “fillers”, though we understand that non-scientists might say so. For those who wish to reads about the benefits of even these so-called “fillers” use the key word search bottom at http://www.nanogreens.com.

  3. Hello Dr. Maher,
Thanks for your comment. It’s true that “filler” to one person could be a nutritional ingredient to another. And very few natural ingredients (even fillers) are completely worthless. To me, something is a filler when it is a relatively inexpensive addition to the product that adds significant bulk to the formula, thus weakening the concentration of other herbs over a single serving. So, for example, while Flaxseed Meal DOES provide Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids, I consider it to be a filler because it’s an inexpensive ingredient that does not add the kind of nutritional value as other ingredients, relative to its bulk. I apply the same criteria to other ingredients that I refer to as “fillers.”

Congratulations on the NanoGreens formulation. It is, indeed, very competitive with other formulations.

  4. Greens First is delicious! My chiropractor introduced me to this product. There was something else similar (and by the way, same price area) that my friend at a health food store insisted I purchase. I bought the other products, attempted to drink it a few times, and then it sat on the shelf for months. Greens First, I’m looking forward to drinking! It tastes great and it’s healthy…. It has become a favorite for the whole family!
